Jeep Yuntu PHEV Concept At Shanghai Auto Show Is Very "Concepty"April 24th, 2017 by James AyreAs the company was expected to, Jeep has unveiled its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) concept vehicle at the Shanghai Auto Show, giving us our first look at what the company thinks the buyers of plug-in electric vehicles are looking for…And the concept doesn't seem to inspire much confidence in the company's willingness to release plug-in electric vehicles. Is it because the companies don't want to see sales of their flagship internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles siphoned off by less-profitable electrified vehicles? Anyways, back to the recent reveal of the Jeep Yuntu concept car: No details about the powertrain were revealed, but the model reportedly would feature an all-electric range of around 65 kilometers (40 miles), accomplished by a battery pack of unknown size. Jeep did say that the vehicle was presented as a China-only proposition, but given the strength of the 3-row SUV market in the U.S., Yuntu could be an indication of the company's thinking on its next generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, which currently offers only 2-row seating. China has an aggressive electrification program with incentives for manufacturers to build both pure electrics and plug-in hybrids. The backs of the first and second row bucket seats have two screens, a main one topped by an auxiliary screen nestled in the headrest.
